myWaves FAQ
- How do I know this really works?
- The myWaves team only launched this project after establishing proof of concept, followed by clinical trials to validate our neuroscience discovery. From March to December 2023, a clinical trial was conducted at the Center for Sleep and Vigilance of the Paris Hôtel-Dieu Hospital (AP-HP), led by Dr. Damien Léger. The study tested our sleep-inducing sounds on patients suffering from chronic insomnia. The Center for Sleep and Vigilance has over 25 years of experience studying sleep disorders in France, as well as in other European and American countries. Their clinical expertise covers a wide range of conditions, including insomnia, sleep apnea, hypersomnia, drowsiness at the wheel, and occupational sleep health. Each year, they perform more than 3,000 sleep studies. In our trial, every participant rated myWaves 8 out of 10 or higher, and the data showed an average increase of 18.9 minutes in total sleep time.
- How does myWaves protect my data?
- myWaves uses advanced security protocols powered by AWS to ensure your data is always protected. All user data is anonymized and encrypted, and your personal information is never stored together with your brainwave data.
- How does myWaves record brain waves?
- The myWaves Pebble uses wet-contact electrode pads to record your brain’s delta waves with clinical-grade accuracy and minimal interference. In sleep clinics, delta waves are measured using an EEG system, typically from the frontal lobe of your forehead. We designed the Pebble to work in the same way—lightweight, easy to use, and capable of producing the same EDF (European Data Format) file used in clinical settings. To create your personalized sounds, we only need a high-quality recording of your slow-wave (deep sleep) activity, which naturally occurs early in your sleep cycle. Even if you experience poor sleep quality, these waves are still generated, and our patented system can identify them from the recording.
- How does myWaves turn brain waves into sound?
- The myWaves algorithm analyzes your delta wave recordings and, through a patented process called neuro-acoustic transduction, transforms them into fully personalized sleep sounds. This process identifies the unique characteristics of your brain waves and creates corresponding sound waves that mimic and resonate with those patterns, helping your brain transition into deeper, more restorative sleep.
- How can replaying my own delta waves help me sleep better?
- The exact mechanism is not yet fully understood. One possibility is a form of “resonance” between your brain’s natural activity and the auditory stimulus when both share the same dynamics. From what we know of brain anatomy, there is a direct connection between the auditory cortex and the brainstem centers that regulate sleep. Although the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood, our clinical trials showed clear results: every participant rated the experience 8 out of 10 or higher.
- Do I have to wear the Pebble on my head every night?
- No. You only need to record your sleep once to generate your unique sound. Please note that you cannot use someone else’s sound—our clinical study confirmed this will not produce results. Your delta wave pattern remains relatively stable throughout adulthood, but we recommend adults re-record their waves 3–4 times per year for optimal accuracy. For children and teenagers, recordings should be updated more frequently as their brain patterns are still developing. The same applies to older adults, whose wave patterns may also change over time.
- What warranty do you offer?
- We provide a full replacement warranty for any defective parts on our products for up to 2 years from the date of purchase.
- What if I record on a night when I sleep badly?
- The recording will not be affected. myWaves only records during your deep sleep phase, so it is not impacted by the overall quality of your night’s sleep or how well you sleep during other phases. Everyone produces slow waves (deep sleep waves) even on a poor night of sleep. While we recommend recording for a full 8 hours, we can typically extract sufficient slow-wave data even from a shorter session.
- What if I record on a night when I have a nightmare?
- Nightmares, restless sleep, or waking up during the night are common experiences for many people. As long as you record your entire night’s sleep, the slow waves we need are typically captured early in the night. Nightmares usually occur later, during the REM stage of sleep, so unusual or vivid dreams will not affect the quality of your recording.
- Can children use the myWaves product?
- Children may use the myWaves product, but only under adult supervision. It is not a toy, and it contains small parts that could pose a choking hazard. Always keep the product and its packaging out of reach of children and pets when not in use.
- Are there any precautions for people with medical devices?
- Yes. Always keep the headphones at least 10 cm (4 inches) away from pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), as the product generates magnetic fields. If you use a CPAP machine, make sure it does not come into contact with the adhesive pad during recording, as this may affect the recording quality.
- Can the headphones be exposed to high temperatures?
- No. Do not expose the headphones to temperatures above 70°C (158°F)—for example, from hair dryers, heaters, or prolonged direct sunlight—as the built-in battery may overheat.
- What is the safe temperature range for charging the headphones?
- Charge the headphones only in environments with an ambient temperature between 10°C and 40°C (50°F–104°F).
- What if the battery inside the headphones is crushed or pierced?
- If the battery is crushed, pierced, or exposed to high pressure, it may cause an internal short circuit, overheating, or even permanent damage to the device. Do not attempt to do this under any circumstances.
Product
- What are the dimensions of the Pebble?
- The Pebble measures approximately 55 mm × 30 mm × 13 mm.
- How do I use myWaves?
- You wear the myWaves Pebble for just one night, during which it records your delta waves using wet-contact adhesive pads placed on your forehead. After that, you simply upload the recorded data from your Pebble to the myWaves website. The myWaves algorithm then analyzes your delta wave recordings and, through a patented process called neuro-acoustic transduction, creates fully personalized sleep sounds. This process identifies the unique characteristics of your brain waves and generates sound waves that mimic those patterns, helping guide you into deeper, more restorative sleep.
- How has myWaves been tested, and what were the results?
- The myWaves team launched this project only after establishing proof of concept and then conducted further clinical trials to validate the findings. From March to December 2023, a clinical trial was conducted at the Center for Sleep and Vigilance, Paris Hôtel-Dieu Hospital (AP-HP), led by Dr. Damien Léger. The study evaluated the sleep-inducing sounds on patients with chronic insomnia. The Center for Sleep and Vigilance has over 25 years of expertise in researching sleep disorders across France, Europe, and the United States. Its clinical focus includes insomnia, sleep apnea, hypersomnia, drowsiness at the wheel, and occupational sleep health. More than 3,000 sleep studies are conducted there each year. In our study, every participant rated myWaves 8 out of 10 or higher, and the data showed a 2.3% increase in REM sleep.
- Does the Pebble require batteries or a power outlet?
- No. The Pebble has a built-in rechargeable battery. You just need to charge it before each use.
- Can the Pebble be used with a CPAP mask at the same time?
- For accurate sleep recording, the Pebble needs a clear and stable connection to your forehead. Because CPAP masks may interfere with its placement or adhesion, we do not recommend using a CPAP mask while recording your sleep with the Pebble.
- Can the Pebble be used if the user has adhesive allergies?
- If you have any adhesive allergies, we recommend consulting your doctor to determine whether this product is suitable for you. Our priority is to ensure every user has a safe and positive experience with myWaves.
- How does myWaves help you fall asleep faster?
- myWaves is not a sleeping pill. Clinical data showed that some participants did fall asleep faster, but we do not officially make this claim, as the evidence was not strong enough to confirm this effect for everyone. However, in our proof-of-concept study, participants entered REM sleep an average of 16.6 minutes faster.
- Does the pebble omit a sound?
- No, the product does not emit any sound.
- Does the Pebble have a light? Will it disturb my sleep or others?
- Yes, the Pebble has a small light to guide you during setup. An instruction sheet explains what each light means. The light stays on for about three minutes after you press the recording button and then turns off automatically during the recording, so it will not disturb your sleep.
- How does the Pebble accurately measure delta waves?
- The Pebble uses special wet-contact electrode pads that make it easier to record your delta waves (the slow brain waves linked to deep sleep) with high accuracy and minimal interference. In a sleep clinic, a technician would place sensors on your forehead to record these waves. The Pebble works in a similar way but is lightweight, easy to use, and designed for home use. It only needs a good-quality recording of your deep sleep phase to create your personalized sleep sounds — even if you have a poor night’s sleep, those waves are still present.
- How do you translate brain waves into sound waves? Can you explain the science behind this?
- The myWaves system reads your delta waves (the slow brain waves linked to deep sleep) and processes them. Then, using a patented method called neuro-acoustic transduction — which means turning brain activity into sound — it creates fully personalized sleep sounds. This process takes the unique patterns in your brain waves and turns them into sound waves with the same rhythm, helping guide your brain back into deep sleep.
- How can I get the best recording?
- Make sure the Pebble and adhesive pads are correctly assembled. Before applying the pad, clean your forehead to remove any oils, dirt, or cosmetics that might interfere with the recording.
- How long will it take me to fall asleep after using it? Does it help me fall asleep faster?
- myWaves is not a sleeping pill. In our clinical studies, some participants did fall asleep faster, but the results were not consistent enough for us to make this a guaranteed effect.
- Do the benefits of using myWaves change over time?
- For most adults (ages 25–60), the benefits stay the same over time. We recommend re-recording your sleep 3–4 times a year to make sure your brainwave pattern is still accurate, although it usually changes very little. If you are under 25 or over 60, your patterns may change more often, so we suggest recording more frequently.
- Can I use myWaves with other sleep aids? Are there any contraindications?
- We recommend not taking sleep medication on the night of your recording. Most other medications or supplements should have little to no effect on your deep sleep waves.
- Does using myWaves have any long-term effects on the brain?
- myWaves has not conducted long-term clinical studies. However, based on current scientific understanding, listening to these sounds is considered safe — similar to listening to relaxing music — and is not expected to cause any long-term.
- What file type are the myWaves sounds?
- The sounds are provided as MP3 files. You can play them on your phone, speaker, headband, earbuds, or any Bluetooth-enabled device.
- How loud should I play the myWaves sounds?
- Play the sounds at a comfortable level — loud enough to hear clearly, but not so loud that it disturbs your sleep or wakes you during the night. Adjust the volume to what feels most relaxing for you.
- What type of adhesive is used for the pads?
- The pads use a 3M medical-grade adhesive, similar to the gentle adhesives commonly found in drugstore products like bandages or medical tapes.
- What should I do if my computer asks to enable BitLocker encryption during upload?
- If your computer prompts you to enable BitLocker when connecting the Pebble, choose Cancel or Skip. Enabling BitLocker may interfere with the device’s ability to record brainwaves and upload files properly.
- Do you keep users’ brainwave data for any other purposes? How is my data protected?
- No. myWaves does not use your brainwave data for any other purposes. All user data is protected using the latest AWS security systems. Data is anonymized and encrypted, and your personal information is never stored together with your brainwave data.
- Is myWaves covered by insurance?
- Currently, myWaves is not an approved medical device and therefore is not covered by health insurance. In the future, as clinical research progresses and if the product obtains medical device approval, there may be a possibility of insurance coverage. However, at this time, there are no such plans.
- Will the Pebble stay attached for side or stomach sleepers?
- Yes, the myWaves Pebble is designed to stay securely in place, even if you sleep on your side or stomach.
- Will there be future versions or updates?
- Yes, myWaves is continuously working to improve its products. Please check our website for the latest news and updates on upcoming releases.
